T O P I C R E V I E WQueenofSheebaI'm a little embarrassed to ask this question, since this is a site dedicated to peace and loveyduviness, and for other reasons too, but does anyone here like to play with...? erpp! I can't say it! *runs away to hide in shame* ...toy soldiers?------------------Hello everybody! I used to be QueenofSheeba and then I was Apollo and now I am QueenofSheeba again (and I'm a guy in case you didn't know)!N_wEvili used to play lots of computer games if that counts? (C&C, Red Alert etc.)proxiemeNot toy soldiers per se, but I've been known to play "Medal of Honor 2: Frontline" (but then I have a weird WWII thing) and sundry other ultra-violent games ("Mark of Kri": You sneek up behind people, strangle them and/or break their necks, and then skewer them.)theFajita3Oh Queen of Sheeba please don't be embarassed no one should pass judgement on you and doodie on them if they do! ------------------food is the only art that nourishes! QueenofSheebaproxieme- is Medal of Honor 2 a table- top game? Those count as "toy soldiers" by my book. I play Warhammer 40k, if you've heard of it, and also more recently the LotR wargame. Thanks, Fajita! wEvil- I like Delta Force 2; I don't play it at home, but at friends houses. It looks rather long in the tooth these days though.I haven't looked at C&C- Generals yet though.I used to play quake2 online for about...30 hours a week though, heh - while that wasnt tactical it still required a good reflex though.StarLover33Don't worry, I've always had a crush on G.I Joe. RRR- you can get "little green guys" cheaply at most stores. Do you have Wishing Wells in Australia? Really good source for the kind of soldiers you can blow up with caps and generally take out your warlike urges upon. ------------------Hello everybody! I used to be QueenofSheeba and then I was Apollo and now I am QueenofSheeba again (and I'm a guy in case you didn't know)!proxiemeNope, not table top - it's a first person shooter for the PS2 that takes you through the Allied Normandy invasion. That's awesome re: the LOTR game, though. To be honest, I'm not that familiar w/ table top games - how do they work?QueenofSheebaMedal of Honor looks like a cool game! Is it a comapanion game to, umm, whatchacallit, 1942?Well, here's how table- top games work:You have a table, or any level playing surface that is handy, like the floor. It is your battlefield. The battlefield would be scattered with miniature hills, trees, forts and trenches etc.You and your opponent each have forces of model/ toy soldiers, little miniatures which are anywhere between 5mm and 54mm tall, depending on the game. There are rules that control the game. For example, a soldier might be allowed to move up to twelve inches in a turn (the game goes by turns). If the soldier had a gun or a bow, he might be allowed to shoot at any one target within 36 inches. Whether he hits the target or not depends on a dice roll... for example, four or higher on a six- sided die. Whether he actually kills the target depends on further die rolling, probably modified by how big the gun is and how tough the target is. If the soldier wants to charge someone and attack them in hand- to- hand combat, it means more die- rolling, modified by the relative skills of the soldiers and their armaments. If enough soldiers are killed, one side might become a little jittery and think about running away. Whether they actually do or not depends on, you guessed it, more die- rolling, modified by how brave the soldiers are. There would be even more complicated rules for tanks, wizards, generals and special characters, airplanes, battleships, dragons, whatever. The biggest annoyance with table- top games is that many of the miniatures are expensive. Also that you usually paint your figures... which can be fun, or not, depending on what you like.Recommendations for learning more:A Beginner's Guide to Wargaming, I forget the author's name. www.games-workshop.com The company which produces several of the games I play. www.black-tree-design.com A source for relatively cheap miniatures. www.thelastalliance.com My fave site for the LotR game! Now, that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about war gaming. ------------------Hello everybody! I used to be QueenofSheeba and then I was Apollo and now I am QueenofSheeba again (and I'm a guy in case you didn't know)!proxiemeThanks QoS NOW I know about table-top gaming Except one thing:If enough soldiers are killed, one side might become a little jittery and think about running away. Whether they actually do or not depends on, you guessed it, more die- rolling, modified by how brave the soldiers are.How is it determined how brave the soldiers are? Does that come in the directions for each game, or with each soldier?QueenofSheebaDepends on the game system. Many game systems give each kind of soldier a numerical "courage" value in the rules (higher for brave soldiers, like knights, lower for timid ones, like peasant levies) which you test dice against when scary things (like the death of a leader) happen. Others are simpler- when 50% of one side is dead, that side runs.Hope this helps!!Sheba ------------------Hello everybody!
